So Talwar’s e-mail account hacked?

So Talwar’s e-mail account hacked?

Well, yahoo fears so and there are a lot of people who do not have any idea on it commented there too! I am not sure whether his email account has been really hacked or not. But it is surprising nobody including the author didn’t mention it is nothing but the same old Stranded Traveler Appeal Scam. Even internet-savvy people get confused on receiving such emails. So what is the best way to find out whether it is a scam or not? First and foremost – Google is your friend. Copy paste a part of the email content to google search box and chances are very high that you will get more info on that particular scam. Do not trust the email content just because it may appear to be sent from a friend or relative, you may find even the name and email address of the sender is correct and known to you. There are so many crooks in the cyberspace who want your money, so be very careful. Now, how do they send email that has your friends name and email address? Your friend’s email account has been hacked? Not necessarily, and less chance for that.

Stranded Traveler Email Scam

There are many ways to get the names and email addresses. Those chain letters and forwarders which looks like not harmful, those online petitions you sign, those forums and discussions groups where you didn’t set the privacy settings properly so that the email address is visible to all, the hundreds of ‘unsubscribe’ links you clicked when you were tired of spam emails, the angry emails you sent as replies to the viagra ads thinking they will read those and apologize for sending the same – the list goes on. OK, now we know how they get names and email address, but how do they send emails? Is that too complicated or technical? No, pretty easy actually. Anybody know the very basics of any internet programming language (PHP for example) can write an email triggering script in minutes. And for those smart kids, there are thousands of example scripts (piece of software code) available in internet itself. Just copy it, make necessary changes for name, email address, content and you are done. That sounds pretty scary, so no way to detect or prevent it? There are ways and most of the email providers warn the user or block such emails. But then technology has gone much fast that the bad guys always find ways to tackle it all.

So what to do when I receive such an email? First, never send them any money, and second, never send any reply to the email. Confirm the email is authentic by calling the sender, or calling his family members. Check for the typos and way of writing, it will be easy for you that way. And what if my friends call me to tell they received such an email (in some cases – even porno materials!)? Tell them it is an email scam and ask them to delete the email immediately. Try to login to your email account, if you can, change your passwords. And finally do not forget the good email habits.

Oh well, I really hope I do not get stranded in any foreign country 🙂

Arranging big concrete blocks at midnight is not fun

January 13th, 2009

Yes, arranging big concrete blocks at midnight is not fun ! That also when you are under the pile of blocks. Things we have to take care of – move slowly, take the blocks one by one from the body, arrange it properly, check which is next block. It may not be concrete blocks always, it is a mix. Concrete, stone, wooden and some other material which we never seen before. And remember, it is not a game, and no one to help us. After all who will come to help you arranging the blocks at midnight !

Didn’t get the head or tail out of it ? OK, ever seen dreams when you are having high temperature ? sometimes it is really scary. When I was a kid, it was different. Instead of the blocks, it will be huge gumballs. Sometimes rubber balls, sometimes glass and sometimes ice, but really huge. I had a tough time trying to escape from these balls. They used to come towards me at a faster pace, and somehow I managed them every time. After the childhood days I didn’t see such dreams, might be the effect of strong antibiotics. Things went smooth until last week when I had fever again. I decided to have homoeopathic medicine this time. And the dream came back, with the huge blocks. I was half conscious and was sure it is a dream, but I couldn’t wake up fully and I couldn’t sleep too. I tried to throw away the blocks, but it was not easy this time. I swirled, I moved sideways, I tried to re-arrange the blocks, and slowly, very slowly they started getting arranged ! I heard my Mom asking me what is going on. Wife came and asked me the same thing two times. And then I came back to my senses, I replied properly, I told them I am having headache and can’t sleep. When they went back, I restarted on the job. I thought why asking for help when I can arrange all blocks myself !

At around 4.00 am, most of the work was done. All the blocks were well arranged. I felt happy and was quite satisfied. I was sweating, but no headache this time. I decided to sleep, reminded me Amitabh Bachan’s dialogue – Ma, mein bahut thak gaya hoom !

I slept peacefully till 9.00 in the morning. When I woke up, only two blankets were on top of me, no, no blocks at all.

Happy new year and welcome back !

Happy New Year - Fresh Leaves, New Beginning.

Happy New Year - Fresh Leaves, New Beginning.

First – Wish you all a very happy, fresh and joyful new year.

It has been quite sometime since I wrote something in my blog. Goobi threatened me and told me either restart it or close down. As he is from Goa, I am not taking any chances and here I am, back again !

You can expect regular updates in the blog this year. At least I hope so.

Have fun and check back soon.

Never go too fast, you will regret later

May 5th, 2008

I was on the usual weekend trip with the family. It was near Vyttila (Cochin), the traffic was really heavy. I heard big siren of an ambulance and knew that there are two and in some emergency. I turned my vehicle to the left as much as possible to help them. The ambulance drivers were trying their best to move forward as the road was jam packed with vehicles. Almost all vehicles were helping and giving way for the ambulances. Suddenly I heard another big horn but this time on left side ! And guess what ? A private bus was on its usual off-road drive (they are notorious for the style of overtaking, not obeying traffic rules, careless driving etc). There were not much space in the left but the bus driver manged to make a fast move and they did overtake the ambulance. Yes, on left side.

I was shell shocked but I couldn’t do anything. Couldn’t even shout. In the picture above, you can see how the private bus driver made way on the left while the ambulances were packed in between other vehicles on the right. It was done by blowing horn very loud (other staff in bus supported him by beating on the bus body and making big sound). After the right turn, there is a narrow bridge and I saw the bus going very fast way front of the ambulances.

I was totally helpless, couldn’t even note down the number of the bus and felt sad. Heavy traffic is quite usual in Cochin on weekends but drivers forgetting the priorities and ethics is really shocking.

I am pretty sure those who are going too fast in their life will regret later. If not today, tomorrow.
